Timothy P. Noyes
President and CEO
Timothy P. Noyes joined Proteon Therapeutics in 2006 as the company’s President and CEO, bringing more than 16 years of knowledge and experience in drug development and bringing products to market. Previously, Mr. Noyes was Chief Operating Officer of Trine Pharmaceuticals, where he held broad general management responsibility across all functional areas relating to drug development, including preclinical, clinical, manufacturing, regulatory, marketing and business development. Prior to joining Trine in 2002, Mr. Noyes held several management and leadership roles with GelTex Pharmaceuticals, prior to its acquisition by Genzyme Corporation. After the acquisition, he held the position of President, Renal Division and President, GelTex Pharmaceuticals. He also worked for several years with Merck & Co. across multiple roles in its hypertension and heart failure group, managed care division, and on its Vasotec and Prilosec products. Mr. Noyes is a graduate of Harvard College, and holds a master’s in business administration from the Harvard Business School.
Kimberly S. Bland, Ph.D.
Senior Director of Research & Development
Dr. Bland holds a B.S. degree in Genetics from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and a Ph.D. in Molecular & Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining Proteon, Dr. Bland was at Vitra Bioscience, Inc., a biotechnology company located in Mountain View, CA.
Steven K. Burke, M.D.
Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Burke joined Proteon in 2006 as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. Previously, Dr. Burke was Senior Vice President of Medical and Regulatory Affairs at Genzyme Corporation. Prior to this Dr. Burke was Vice President of Clinical Research for GelTex Pharmaceuticals and held positions at Glaxo. Dr. Burke is an accomplished researcher, possessing drug development experience in metabolism, renal, gastroenterology, infectious disease, oncology, and dermatology. Dr. Burke is a graduate of Harvard College and Cornell University Medical College. He completed a medical residency and fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is American Board of Internal Medicine certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
Martha J. Carter, RAC
Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance
Martha J. Carter joined Proteon as senior vice president of regulatory affairs and quality assurance, bringing with her 29 years of regulatory experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Previously, she was senior vice president of regulatory affairs at Trine Pharmaceuticals, Inc., located in Waltham, Mass., where she was responsible for the company’s worldwide regulatory function. Prior to this, Carter was Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance at GelTex Pharmaceuticals, and previously held regulatory positions at Genetics Institute, and Serono. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Northeastern University and completed postgraduate studies in therapeutics at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
Mark J. Fitzpatrick
Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Fitzpatrick has over 20 years experience in the financial management of biotechnology and high technology companies. Prior to joining Proteon, he was the Chief Financial Officer of RenaMed Biologics, Inc. Prior to RenaMed, he was the Chief Financial Officer of Dynogen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He also spent several years in the software industry as Chief Financial Officer of WorldStreet Corporation. Prior to WorldStreet, Mark spent nearly 8 years in the cellular therapy field as the Chief Financial Officer of Diacrin, Inc., where he participated in its successful IPO. He was also a member of the Steering Committee which governed Diacrin/Genzyme LLC, a joint venture between Diacrin and Genzyme Corp. He also held financial management positions at Repligen Corporation and served on the professional staff of Arthur Andersen and Co. He earned his CPA certificate in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1987 and is a graduate of Boston College’s school of management.
F. Nicholas Franano, M.D.
Chief Scientific Officer
F. Nicholas Franano, M.D. founded Proteon Therapeutics in 2001 and served as CEO until 2006, raising more than $23M in capital for the Company. Dr. Franano holds an M.D. and an M.A. in biomedical research from Washington University, St. Louis, and a B.S. in cell biology from the University of Kansas. He completed a residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in interventional radiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1999, where he invented Proteon’s permanent vasodilation method while serving on the faculty. Dr. Franano has received numerous research awards, grants, and research fellowships, and has authored several research papers and patents. He maintained an active clinical practice in interventional radiology from 1999 through 2005.
Joseph E. Tyler
Vice President of Manufacturing
Joseph E. Tyler brings 33 years of manufacturing experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry to Proteon. Prior to joining Proteon Therapeutics, Inc., Tyler served as principal for PharmSupply, Inc., located in Creedmoor, N.C. Prior to this, Tyler was VP Manufacturing for Momenta Pharmaceuticals, VP Operations for Salix Pharmaceuticals, and VP Manufacturing for GelTex Pharmaceuticals. He also held manufacturing positions at Abbot Biotech, Damon Biotech, and Schering. Mr. Tyler holds a chemical engineering degree from Carnegie-Mellon University and a biochemical engineering degree from Cornell University.
William P. Whitaker, Esq.
Vice President and General Counsel
Mr. Whitaker holds an economics degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, and a Jurist Doctor degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He has been a corporate attorney for more than 35 years and helped found Proteon Therapeutics with Dr. Franano. Mr. Whitaker has prior start-up experience with two biotechnology companies.
Marco D. Wong, M.D., Ph.D.
Physician-Scientist
Dr. Wong formerly served as a post-doctoral research associate at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, where he conducted genetic and molecular analysis of stem cells and germ cell development. He brings 20 years of research experience. He is a graduate of California State University and holds an M.D., Ph.D. from Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Garheng Kong, M.D., Ph.D.
Intersouth Partners
Dr. Kong joined Intersouth Partners in 2000 and has focused primarily on Intersouth’s life science portfolio. His role at Intersouth involves all aspects of venture investing. He has full-cycle investing experience, successfully sourcing, syndicating, managing and exiting investments. Prior to joining Intersouth, Dr. Kong worked as a clinical scientist at Glaxo Wellcome. While completing his Ph.D., he worked with the Duke University Office of Science and Technology to help commercialize early stage technology. Dr. Kong serves on the board of directors of the North Carolina Medical Device Organization and the SEBIO organization, and has served on the Duke University Medical Center Institutional Review Board. He graduated at the top of his class from Duke’s School of Medicine and received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University. He received his M.B.A. from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, where he also graduated at the top of his class. Dr. Kong holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University.
Hubert Birner, Ph.D.; M.B.A.
General Partner, TVM Capital
Dr. Birner joined TVM Capital in 2000, and is a General Partner for life sciences in the firm’s Munich office. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Direvo Biotech AG (Cologne, Germany), Argos Therapeutics Inc. (Durham, North Carolina) and Spepharm Holding BV (Amsterdam, Netherlands). He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Evotec AG (Hamburg, Germany), Jerini AG (Berlin, Germany) and BioXell SA (Milan, Italy), and represents the interests of TVM Capital with Ardana Bioscience plc (Edinburgh, Scotland)) and Neuro3d SA (Mulhouse, France). Before joining TVM Capital, he was Head of Business Development Europe and Director of Marketing for Germany at Zeneca. Hubert joined Zeneca from McKinsey & Company’s European Health Care and Pharmaceutical practice. As a management consultant, he gained extensive experience in R&D management; marketing and sales; and joint venture structuring and business development. Dr. Birner was also an Assistant Professor for biochemistry at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. In this capacity, he directed various research projects for large pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Birner holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a doctoral degree in biochemistry from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, where he graduated summa cum laude. His doctoral thesis was honored with the Hoffmann-La Roche prize for outstanding basic research in metabolic diseases.
David G. Lowe, Ph.D.
Managing Director, Skyline Ventures
David G. Lowe, Ph.D. joined Skyline Ventures in 2002. Dr. Lowe serves on the boards of NimbleGen Systems, Inc., Applied Genetics Technologies Corporation, and Avidia, Inc. Prior to joining Skyline, Dr. Lowe spent 16 years at Genentech, Inc., where he led drug discovery activities in biologics and small molecule therapeutics, eventually as director of cardiovascular research. He was responsible for drug discovery efforts that resulted in eight drug candidates taken into clinical development, including the successful cancer therapy Avastin™. Dr. Lowe was also involved in cardiovascular strategic planning and product portfolio management at Genentech and worked extensively with Business Development on licensing of therapeutics. Dr. Lowe holds B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry from the University of Toronto, Canada, and was a Kauffman fellow. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is an inventor on seven issued or pending US patents.
Brendan O’Leary, Ph.D.
Principal, Prism VentureWorks
Brendan O’Leary, Ph.D. joined Prism VentureWorks in 2003 where he focuses primarily on companies in the medical device, pharmaceutical and diagnostic sectors. Dr. O’Leary serves on the boards of BioRexis Pharmaceutical Corporation and Locus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. O’Leary has more than a dozen years of experience in the biotechnology and medical technology arenas and has held numerous senior operating positions at companies, including Meso Scale Discovery, a high-throughput drug discovery start-up, and IGEN International, a leading medical diagnostics company (acquired by Roche). He is an accomplished scientist with numerous publications, inventions, and commercialized products to his credit. Dr. O’Leary holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a B.A. in Chemistry and Economics from Middlebury College, and was a Kauffman fellow.

Gregory D. Phelps
Gregory D. Phelps’ career has been focused for over thirty years in the medical products and biotechnology fields, where he has held Chief Executive Officer and other executive management positions in several companies. He has served as Chief Executive Officer of RenaMed Biologics, Inc., Ardais Corporation, Viagene, Inc. and ZymoGenetics, Inc. He has also served as Vice Chairman of Dyax Corporation, Executive Vice President of Genzyme Corporation and Vice President of Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc (now Baxter Healthcare). Mr. Phelps is currently on the Board of Directors of EPIX Pharmaceuticals and has previously served on the Boards of Directors of nine public and private companies in the health care field, as well as on the Boards of The Hemophilia Foundation of California and the Charles River School of Dover, MA. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Bradley University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
